  17. NameChange door is a Sybilware Shareware product and MUST be registered
  18. if used for longer than 30 days.  If you do not see a Serial Number when
  19. you run NameChange, then PLEASE ask your sysop to register this door.

  23. NameChange enables you to change names on a PCBoard 14.5a BBS system
  24. with very simple commands.
  25.  
  26. NameChange has 4 commands for normal users.  Each command is given on
  27. the door command line, along with the NAME command.
  28.  
  29. To get an alias, you must first REQUEST it.   Sometime after that the
  30. Sysop will approve or deny your alias.   When your alias has been
  31. approved by the sysop, you will get a message from NameChange informing
  32. you that it is now ready for use.  You can change to an alias with the
  33. ALIAS command, and switch back from it with the REAL command.  You can
  34. see what aliases you have defined at any time with the SHOW command.
  35. Examples of all these commands are listed later on in this file.

  37. When NameChange runs, it doesn't do ANY I/O at all, that's why all your
  38. commands to NameChange are on one line.  This makes NameChange run much
  39. faster, but can confuse users because there is NO response to their
  40. entry for a little while (up to a minute on a slow or overloaded
  41. machine, averages about 5-7 seconds on a 386/20 with DesqView).  Before
  42. NameChange exits, it's writes it's output over to a file that PCBoard
  43. will automatically show to you.   So, when you type a NAME ... command,
  44. there WILL be a slight pause before you see any response; just hold on,
  45. the board will be back soon with your alias.

  62. Mattering on how the Sysop has set up this implementation, you will
  63. probably not have access to the full BBS under your alias.  While you
  64. are in your alias, you will only have access to the conferences the
  65. sysop has determined are "alias allowed" conferences.  This allowance
  66. may be different for each alias you have.  The best way I've found to
  67. tell what conferences you can get to is to either try to Join one, or
  68. type SELECT and PCBoard will show you all conferences you have access
  69. to.

  78. Using mail doors under any aliasing scheme can get tricky.  Unless the
  79. mail door used properly implements secondary names (most don't), the
  80. following SHOULD get you through.

  82. If you use the mail door only for mail under your alias, then all is
  83. well, just make sure you ALWAYS use a NAME ALIAS command before you open
  84. the mail door.

  86. If you use the mail door for non-alias conferences as well, then it gets
  87. tricky.  Depending on your sysop's configuration then you need to do one
  88. or the other of the following:

  90. 1) Easy fix: IF the mail door rejects messages from your alias when
  91. opened under real name, (or vice versa), then just upload your REP
  92. packet twice.  Once under your real name, once under your alias.  Since
  93. the door will toss out the REPs it can't use, then uploading it twice
  94. doesn't hurt anything.

  96. 2) Hard fix: Keep SEPERATE QWK/REP directories (& Reader configs or
  97. Readers) for your real name and each alias.  To exchange mail under your
  98. real name, make sure you are in your real name when you open the mail
  99. door.  To exchange mail under an alias, make sure you do the proper NAME
  100. ALIAS command before opening the mail door.
