│ NameChange Door User Documentation │
╘═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
NameChange door is a Sybilware Shareware product and MUST be registered
if used for longer than 30 days. If you do not see a Serial Number when
you run NameChange, then PLEASE ask your sysop to register this door.
Copyrights all held by boB Gage. Only UNMODIFIED copies of COMPLETE
NameChange archives can be distributed.
NameChange enables you to change names on a PCBoard 14.5a BBS system
with very simple commands.
NameChange has 4 commands for normal users. Each command is given on
the door command line, along with the NAME command.
To get an alias, you must first REQUEST it. Sometime after that the
Sysop will approve or deny your alias. When your alias has been
approved by the sysop, you will get a message from NameChange informing
you that it is now ready for use. You can change to an alias with the
ALIAS command, and switch back from it with the REAL command. You can
see what aliases you have defined at any time with the SHOW command.
Examples of all these commands are listed later on in this file.
When NameChange runs, it doesn't do ANY I/O at all, that's why all your
commands to NameChange are on one line. This makes NameChange run much
faster, but can confuse users because there is NO response to their
entry for a little while (up to a minute on a slow or overloaded
machine, averages about 5-7 seconds on a 386/20 with DesqView). Before
NameChange exits, it's writes it's output over to a file that PCBoard
will automatically show to you. So, when you type a NAME ... command,
there WILL be a slight pause before you see any response; just hold on,
the board will be back soon with your alias.
Formats of NameChng commands: [] = optional
NAME REQUEST <alias first name> [<alias last name>]
NAME ALIAS [Alias Number 1..n]
NAME REAL
NAME SHOW
Examples of NameChng commands: Comments (Don't type these):
NAME REQUEST TERRIBLE TINA Requests alias of Terrible Tina
NAME ALIAS Changes to your first (only) alias
NAME ALIAS 3 Changes to your third alias
NAME REAL Changes to your real name
NAME SHOW Lists aliases you have available
Mattering on how the Sysop has set up this implementation, you will
probably not have access to the full BBS under your alias. While you
are in your alias, you will only have access to the conferences the
sysop has determined are "alias allowed" conferences. This allowance
may be different for each alias you have. The best way I've found to
tell what conferences you can get to is to either try to Join one, or
type SELECT and PCBoard will show you all conferences you have access
to.
Thanks for using the NameChange door!
-----------------[ Using Mail Doors With NameChange ]------------------
Using mail doors under any aliasing scheme can get tricky. Unless the
mail door used properly implements secondary names (most don't), the
following SHOULD get you through.
If you use the mail door only for mail under your alias, then all is
well, just make sure you ALWAYS use a NAME ALIAS command before you open
the mail door.
If you use the mail door for non-alias conferences as well, then it gets
tricky. Depending on your sysop's configuration then you need to do one
or the other of the following:
1) Easy fix: IF the mail door rejects messages from your alias when
opened under real name, (or vice versa), then just upload your REP
packet twice. Once under your real name, once under your alias. Since
the door will toss out the REPs it can't use, then uploading it twice
doesn't hurt anything.
2) Hard fix: Keep SEPERATE QWK/REP directories (& Reader configs or
Readers) for your real name and each alias. To exchange mail under your
real name, make sure you are in your real name when you open the mail
door. To exchange mail under an alias, make sure you do the proper NAME
ALIAS command before opening the mail door.
